Revelers Celebrate German Culture At 57th Annual Steuben Parade

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- German-Americans marched up Fifth Avenue Sunday for the 57th Annual Steuben Parade.

This year's grand marshal, Emmy Award-winning American Journalist John Muller, led the celebration along Fifth Avenue between 68th to 86th streets. The parade stepped off at noon.

Muller, who was born in Queens and raised on Long Island, is a German-American whose ancestors hail from Bavaria.

The parade is known for its music, dancing, marching bands, karneval groups and probably most notably are the people who dress in "Tracht," the traditional clothing worn in many different German regions.

While the parade was free to everyone, those who purchased grand stand tickets at Fifth and 79th Street were treated to performances by dance troupes.

The Steuben Parade Oktoberfest was also held in Central Park following the parade.

The event, which kicked off at 1:30 p.m., boasted great German food, music by "Spitze!" and "Die Schlauberger" and claimed to be the largest beer fest in New York City.
