Columbia University Student Dies In Upstate NY Kayaking Accident

HADLEY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A medical student at Columbia University was killed in a kayaking accident in upstate New York on Saturday.

According to the Saratoga County sheriff's office, Jeffrey Tang was in a kayak on Stewart's Pond in Hadley when he apparently fell into the water.

Witnesses said they saw Tang struggle before disappearing underwater.

Sheriff's deputies said he was with other medical students spending the weekend in the area, the Albany Times Union reported.

Deputies said other students tried to rescue Tang, but he disappeared before anyone could reach him.

Several police departments searched for Tang on Saturday, but were unsuccessful. His body was recovered on Sunday.

Deputies said he was not wearing a life vest.

Tang grew up in Brooklyn and was a fencer at New York University before attending medical school.
