No Trial Date For Jets WR Quincy Enunwa, Who Is Accused Of Assault
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A New York Jets practice squad player is due in court in two weeks on domestic violence charges, possibly to have a trial date set.
A conference scheduled in Florham Park municipal court Wednesday for Quincy Enunwa was postponed because the woman he was accused of injuring did not attend.
Defense lawyer Anthony Fusco says the woman lives in Nebraska, where Enunwa attended college, and is not currently in a relationship with Enunwa.
Enunwa did attend court for Wednesday's scheduled conference.
Fusco says Enunwa, who has pleaded not guilty to simple assault, does not plan to change his plea but that it's possible that the case will be resolved without going to trial.
Whether the alleged victim testifies could be a key to the case.
The next court date is set for Oct. 15.
Florham Park police said the rookie wide receiver pulled a female off a bed in a hotel on Aug. 31 in Florham Park — the town where the Jets practice — and that she injured her head and finger.
Enunwa was arrested just after the league put in place tougher penalties for players accused of domestic violence, including a six-week suspension for first offenses and at least a year for second offenses. That policy change came as the league wrestled how to handle the case of former Baltimore Ravens star running back Ray Rice, who was arrested in February in an Atlantic City hotel and accused of assaulting his then-fiancee in Atlantic City. He was thrown out of the league indefinitely after the release of the video that showed him punching the woman, who has since married him.
The NFL has said it is looking at the Enunwa case.
The 22-year-old wide receiver -- who was drafted in the sixth round -- is on the practice squad, meaning he is not active for games.
