Mets Pitcher Jacob DeGrom Named NL Rookie Of The Month — Again

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- He's done it again.

Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom has been named the National League Rookie of the Month for September. The right-hander previously won the award for July.

The favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award went 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts in the final month of the season. His September was highlighted by a historic start against the Marlins in which he struck out the first eight batters he faced.

The 26-year-old struck out 38 and walked just six in 27 September innings, with opponents hitting just .189 off him. He was scheduled to make his final start against the Astros in the final series of the season, but general manager Sandy Alderson and manager Terry Collins opted to shut him down as a precautionary measure.

DeGrom finished his first season in the big leagues with a 9-6 record and a 2.69 ERA. He struck out 144 and walked 43 in 140 1/3 innings over 22 starts.

His main competition for Rookie of the Year is Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton, who stole 56 bases for Cincinnati.
