Police: Officers Shoot, Kill Knife-Wielding Man Allegedly Quarreling With Mother In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police shot and killed a man who allegedly came at officers with knives Friday evening, when they came to a Brooklyn home to resolve a quarrel between the man and his mother.

Officers were dispatched sometime after 5 p.m. to Avenue Y and East 26th Street in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, after a call of a quarrel between the 54-year-old woman and her son, police said.

The son left and was not there when officers first arrived, police said.

Officers took a report and left left, but they came back sometime after 7 p.m. when the woman reported her son came back with at least four knives, police said.

Officers saw the man sitting on the couch with the knives, and when he came toward the officers, they ordered him to drop the knives, police alleged. The man refused, so the officers shot him, police said.

The man -- identified as Denis Volchkin, 28 -- suffered one gunshot wound to the left side of his torso, and was taken to Coney Island Hospital, police said. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police confirmed to 1010 WINS.

The other two family members in the house were not injured, police said.

This was the third police-involved shooting reported this week in the five boroughs of New York City.

This past Monday, police shot and killed a man who was allegedly stabbing another man with a knife in an apartment on the cusp of Kensington and Midwood, Brooklyn. The other man was also killed by an accidental police bullet, authorities later said.

Police rushed to an apartment in the Ocean Parkway building Brooklyn around 7:15 p.m. that day on a report of a man assaulting a woman with a knife, authorities said.

When officers arrived, they found Francisco Carvajal, 47, armed with a knife and Rafael Laureano, 51, inside the apartment, police said.

A woman – identified as Katarzyna Russo – and two children, ages 6 and 7, had also locked themselves in a bathroom as the suspect tried to get inside, police said. They said Laureano was the woman's current boyfriend, while Carvajal was her ex.

Police said Laureano confronted Carvajal, who was then shot by police after he refused orders to drop the knife. Carvajal was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police initially said Laureano died of stab wounds. But the New York City Medical Examiner's office determined that his death was actually caused by a perforating gunshot wound to the back.

Also Monday, officers shot and wounded a 19-year-old man in the Bronx.

Around 5:45 p.m. that day, police said two officers on foot saw a man shooting a handgun on East 145th Street and College Avenue in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.

They said the 19-year-old suspect started running toward them, then pointed his gun at one cop. Police fired back, shooting the suspect in the elbow.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
