Norm Lewis, Broadway's First Black Phantom: I'm Just Happy To Be 'A Part Of That Journey'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tony nominee Norm Lewis is making history at Broadway's Majestic Theatre.
Lewis is the 14th actor to star in the title role of "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway -- and the first African-American.

He took over the role in May and recently announced he will star in the musical until early February.
"It's iconic," Lewis said in an in-studio interview with CBS 2's Dana Tyler. "I'm just so happy to be a part of that journey that is going on for hopefully many, many years."
Lewis admitted he was nervous at first about working with renowned composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
"But after the first five minutes, he just made me feel so at home," Lewis said. " ... He was a champion in having me be very successful in this role."
