Tony-Award Winning Actress Marian Seldes Dies At 86

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Marian Seldes, a Tony Award-winning actress of stage and film who became a muse to playwright Edward Albee has died in New York.

Seldes was 86.

Her brother, Timothy Seldes, said his sister died peacefully at her home on Monday after an extended illness.

Born in 1921 in New York City, Marian Seldes' career spanned 60 years. Broadway.com called her "the consummate actress" who maintained a "focus and hard work (that) resulted in extraordinary performances that became touchstones for those who worked with her and saw her on stage."

Her career on Broadway began in 1948 with the Robinson Jeffers adaptation of "Medea," directed by John Gieglud and with Judith Anderson starring in the title role, the publication reported.

Seldes was nominated for a Tony five times, for her performances in ``A Delicate Balance,'' ``Father's Day,'' ``Deathtrap,'' ``Ring Round the Moon'' and ``Dinner at Eight.'' She won in 1967 for ``A Delicate Balance.''

Her collaboration with Albee included ``The Play About the Baby,'' ``Tiny Alice,'' ``Father's Day'' and ``Three Tall Women,'' which won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Seldes was also known for her work on the big and small screen and the radio airwaves. She appeared as Eleanor Roosevelt in "Truman" and also had roles in "Leatherheads" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told," among other films, Broadway.com recalled.

She also appeared as Murphy Brown's quirky aunt in "Murphy Brown," and as Mr. Big's mother in "Sex and the City," the publication recalled. She also appeared on CBS Radio Mystery Theater from 1974 until 1982.

Seldes also won a Tony Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 for her contribution to the theater, BroadwayWorld.com reported.
