NJ Utility Turns To Sesame Street To Prepare Families For Emergencies

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey's largest utility is teaming with the producers of television's Sesame Street to help families prepare for major emergencies such as hurricanes, tornadoes and floods.

Public Service Electric and Gas and the Sesame Workshop held an event in Newark on Tuesday to launch two programs.

The goal of the initiatives is instituting emergency preparedness into families' routines through simple tips, strategies and activities, and providing them with effective and comforting ways to respond when a disaster occurs.

The PSEG Foundation has committed $1.3 million to develop the initiatives, which have English and Spanish versions.

Tuesday's event was staged at the Ironbound Early Learning Center in Newark, and a similar event is planned for Thursday in Long Beach Township. Both locations were among the hardest-hit areas when Superstorm Sandy struck in 2012.
