Park Slope Teens Discuss Experiences With Cops During Town Hall Meeting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Student after student stepped up to the mic to share their experiences with the police on Friday night.

The meeting at John Jay Educational Campus was organized after the police in Park Slope allegedly told teens to get out of the neighborhood.

"I was stopped by the cops just because I was walking down the street. I just happened to be dark-skinned walking down the street," one teen said.

Police told the Daily News that they were called to the scene at Seventh Avenue near 9th Street after a group of teenagers started fighting in a restaurant.

Witness Sara Bennett told 1010 WINS' Darius Radzius that officers told the teens to leave the neighborhood.

"They were yelling at them to get out of the neighborhood. The kids were really quiet. You could tell they had no idea what was going on or what was going to happen next," Bennett said.

Police claim that they responded to the call about the fight and told the teens to go home.

"The cops told the teens to 'go home, get out of here,'" NYPD Spokesman Stephen Davis told the Daily News, "One witness even heard cops say 'Go home and do your homework.'"

A Community Affairs Officer at the 78th Precinct said that officers had not been invited to the meeting on Friday night, The Brooklyn Paper reported.
