What Was Mystery Man Doing In Nyack College Dorms?

SOUTH NYACK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A mystery man has been spotted on the campus of Nyack College in South Nyack in recent days, and surveillance video shows him in both the male and female dorms.

As CBS 2's Lou Young reported Thursday, the picturesque campus at Nyack College has been placed under a security alert as the school and local police try to figure out what the recent intruder was after.

"He broke into the homes, the dorms," said Nyack College freshman Danaya Pyatt. "He doesn't belong on our campus. He doesn't belong here at all."

The man was spotted on security video on Sept. 23, prowling the Rockland County campus in an unhurried and unflustered manner.

"He walked by several students, very unassuming. No one confronted him about anything. No one questioned him," said Sgt. Daniel Wilson of the South Nyack-Grandview Police Department. "He was just going around trying doors, and he did enter a couple of rooms that were unoccupied."

The man's presence on open campus at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday did not immediately raise alarms. A soccer match was in progress on campus that day, and some people at first thought he might be a fan from the visiting team.

But then, a student noticed him in one of the dormitories. School officials later checked the security cameras and found out what he had been up to.

"What did he want when he was coming here, because nothing was missing?" said freshman Sandra Rodriguez.

The first sighting was inside a men's dormitory, and was mentioned to security only after the fact. A security camera check also spotted the man in a women's dorm.

The fear is that he was casing the place, or testing security.

"We had a meeting last night with, like, the people who are in charge of the residence buildings and stuff," said junior Jennifer Cooke. "And it made us – well, it made me feel a little bit safer."

"We've seen the picture. They're posted all over in our dorms," said freshman Jacob Ploch, "and so we have a really good description of what he looks like."

Police stressed that the man is not a suspect in any crime, but they would like to know who he is and what he was doing.
