Report: Mets, Yankees Have Dave Magadan On Their Radars

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets and Yankees are both looking for hitting coaches, and Dave Magadan is on their radar.

"I have been called about that," Magadan told the New York Post in regard to a conversation with the Yankees. "It's in the preliminary stages, and that's all I can say about it."

Magadan also admitted that he's spoken with the Mets about their vacancy.

"Same thing," Magadan told the newspaper. "Preliminary phone calls to see if I had interest."

Magadan, who was drafted by the Mets and played for them from 1986-1992, is currently the Rangers' hitting coach. He's signed through the 2015 season, but Texas has granted its coaches permission to talk with clubs about open positions.

"They are letting all their coaches, under contract or not, talk to other teams because of the manager situation,'' Magadan told the New York Post in reference to Ron Washington, who resigned as manager of the Rangers in early September.

The Yankees' position became open when the club fired Kevin Long last week. The Mets reportedly have interest in hiring Long, though he doesn't appear ready to make a decision any time soon.

"I am not even close to doing anything," Long said, according to the newspaper. "I have just spoken to teams and everything is preliminary."

The Mets fired hitting coach Dave Hudgens on May 27 and then promoted Lamar Johnson — previously the organization's minor-league hitting coordinator — for the position.

In early October, the club announced that Johnson and assistant hitting coach Luis Natera would be replaced, though the duo was offered jobs in the minor-league system.

Prior to being hired by the Rangers, Magadan was the Padres' hitting coach from 2003-2006 and the Red Sox's hitting coach from 2007-2012.
