Woman Caught On Camera Stealing Hundreds Of Dollars Of Clothes From L.I. Store

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Stores offer big sales on Columbus Day, but the deals weren't good enough for one woman, who took matters into her own hands -- and purse.

As CBS 2's Alice Gainer reported, security cameras at The Island, a Lilly Pulitzer clothing store in Garden City, Long Island, caught a woman stuffing item after item into her large handbag.

Store owner Carol Mangels estimates the woman shoplifted $800 to $900 worth of merchandise.

"I saw a bunch of empty hangers, and I never have empty hangers in my store," Mangels said.

Mangels was working Monday alone in her store. Though her eyes can't be everywhere at once, her four security cameras are set up in plain sight and captured everything clearly and in color.

She detailed to CBS 2 some of the pricey items that were snatched -- including a blouse worth $158 and a Murfee scarf valued at $128.

Mangels said she has hired a couple more people since the heist "because I realize I need at least two or three people in the store."

She added that she believes the woman had stolen from the shop before and also possibly from a nearby boutique. Mangels is hoping someone will be able to identify her and put an end to the thefts.
