NYC First Responders Test Readiness With Simulated Bus Crash Drill

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- More than 100 first responders sprang into action Sunday on Randall's Island.

Police, firefighters and staff from the city's Office of Emergency Management took part in a joint disaster drill, CBS 2 reported.

Their biggest test was a simulation of a bus that crashed into a building and then burst into flames.

The workers were tested on their ability to control the flames, find the injured and give them emergency medical treatment.

"You're reminded of things that you learned in school, and then you learn new things that you just didn't know," said one participant.

Organizers said they chose the bus crash scenario because it's very likely to happen in real life.

The drill was held at the New York Fire Department Training Academy located on the island.
