NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A new video by an activist group shows girls between 6 and 13 years old dressed up as pink princesses, and firing off F-bombs to make a point about sexism in society.
As CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez reported, the for-profit anti-hate T-shirt group behind the video — titled “Potty-mouthed princesses drop F-bombs for feminism” — says the viewer should “contrast F-word with words and statistics society should find shocking such as ‘pay inequality’ and ‘rape.’”
“What is more offensive? A little girl saying f**k, or the f***ing unequal and sexist way society treats girls and women?” a group of girls says in sequence.
The video goes on to discuss pay inequality, with one girl saying, “Pay up m***erf***er,” and another saying, “I shouldn’t need a penis to get paid.”
The video goes on to address rape and violence against women, claiming a “f***ed up fact” that one out of five women will be raped or sexually assaulted.
“Stop telling girls how to dress, and start teaching boys not to f***ing rape,” the girls say in sequence.
Some New Yorkers did not react well to the video upon seeing it.
“It’s inappropriate for a young girl to say those words,” one woman said.
And child psychologist Jeffrey Gardere said the message, while powerful, can be confusing to children.
“There is absolutely the risk that very young girls and boys watching this may think just being able to use those curse words make them powerful,” Gardere said. “”And that’s why it’s up to us as parents to determine whether we want them to watch this campaign and or explaining to them what it really means.”
CBS 2 was unable to reach the group that made the video. Many who watched it said they support the message, just not the method to get it out.
“The point could have been gotten across a different way that would be equally as powerful without having children cross the line,” one woman said.
The campaign argued that it is all “bad words for a good cause.”
