Report: Mets Could Be Interested In Michael Cuddyer On 2-Year Deal
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The starting pitching is in place. The bullpen appears to be set. General manager Sandy Alderson and manager Terry Collins will be back.
But about that offense...
If the Mets plan to return to the playoffs next season for the first time since 2006, they'll need to add a bat -- or two.
The payroll is expected to increase, though the top free agents available are expected to be out of the Wilpons' price range. In order to trade for a superstar player like Giancarlo Stanton, Alderson will have to part with one of his prized young pitchers, and it's highly unlikely that Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard are going anywhere.
According to the New York Daily News, the Mets have interest in signing free-agent-to-be Michael Cuddyer to a two-year deal.
Cuddyer, 35, would fill one of the Mets' two glaring holes (corner outfielder). The veteran right fielder would likely push Curtis Granderson and his weak arm to left field.
But this is about his bat, not his glove. The two-time All-Star battled injuries for much of 2014, but was very productive when he played. In 49 games for the Rockies, the right-handed hitter batted .332 with 10 homers, 31 RBIs and a .376 on-base percentage.
Coming off an injury-plagued season, and considering his age, Cuddyer can likely be had at a manageable price. The fact that he's friends with fellow Norfolk, Virginia native David Wright might also help Alderson's pitch.
The other glaring hole is shortstop, though the Mets aren't likely to pony up for Hanley Ramirez, and J.J. Hardy signed an extension with the Orioles during the postseason.
