Police: Cop Fatally Shoots Knife-Wielding Man In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police shot and killed a man in Queens on Sunday morning after he tried to attack a cop with a utility knife, authorities said.

Police received a complaint overnight about a man threatening people with a knife at New York Hospital Queens in Flushing, authorities said. Police were patrolling the area around 8:30 a.m., spotted a man who fit the description of the suspect and tried to apprehend him in front of the Carlyle Towers Apartments on Kissena Boulevard, police said.

The 29-year-old suspect then lunged at a sergeant with the utility knife, missing him, authorities said. An officer fired twice, hitting the suspect in the chest, police said.

Police say they have video of the suspect menacing people at the hospital and plan to release it later, 1010 WINS reported. The suspect had been treated at the hospital around 2:30 a.m. Sunday and released, but he returned an hour later, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

It was the second police-involved shooting in Queens in four days.

On Thursday, cops shot and killed a man in Jamaica, Queens, after he allegedly hit an officer in the head with a hatchet.

The man, Zale Thompson, 32, was a "self-radicalized" Muslim convert who may have been inspired by last week's terrorist attack in Ottawa, Canada, police said.
