Hoboken Man Allegedly Threw Eggs, Ammonia On Neighbor's Door

HOBOKEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A Hoboken, New Jersey man faces multiple charges after allegedly vandalizing doors of his apartment building.

Police believe 70-year-old John Pietropaolo is behind a series of incidents since August 2012.

Surveillance video shows Pietropaolo returning a neighbor's doormat after allegedly cutting it in half and then tossing liquid eggs on her door.

One of many longtime residents of 5 Church Towers, Peter Costello, was shocked at the charges facing his neighbor.

"I hope that he's not in that much trouble for vandalism," he said.

Hoboken police say Pietropaolo repeatedly threw not only eggs, but also ammonia and oil on two doors -- racking up a total of 28 counts of criminal mischief.

"It's ridiculous! I don't even know what I would do if it was to happen to me," Hoboken resident Andrea Pardonnet told CBS2's Tony Aiello.

As Aiello reported, it's not clear if Pietropaolo knew the woman who lives upstairs, whose door he allegedly repeatedly vandalized.

"I can't believe it, I really can't believe it. He was a regular guy," Costello said.

The woman whose door he reportedly threw eggs on has a son who works for Hoboken police; he installed a tiny surveillance camera that captured one of the crimes in progress.

Police say the 63-year-old woman lived in fear for two years while the incidents occurred.

She told investigators she has no idea why she was targeted for abuse.
