Team Grades: New York Jets Continue To Search For Answers After Loss To Chiefs

By Tyson Rauch

The New York Jets entered Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs as heavy underdogs. Following a 24-10 loss it was evident that the Jets (1-8) were the inferior team to the Chiefs (5-3). Gang Green has now lost eight games in a row and the future looks anything but bright.

Offense Grade: C

Another inconsistent day for the New York Jets offense as there were several highs and lows. There were some glimpses of a rushing attack featuring Chris Johnson (69 yards) and a passing game led by Michael Vick and Percy Harvin (11 catches, 129 receiving yards). Then there were blown opportunities in the red zone once again along with pedestrian offensive line play.  The play calling remains mind boggling at times as offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg seems to lose the pulse of the game. If you have Michael Vick at quarterback, is there a repeated need for wildcat plays? If you have a hot hand in running back Chris Johnson, why stop calling plays for him? What happened to featuring tight end Jace Amaro?

Defense Grade: C

It is tough to truly assess the defense when you are fielding players that were signed off of the street within the last two weeks. The Jets secondary remains a mess and the situation was made worse by Antonio Allen’s awful performance. Allen was benched by head coach Rex Ryan, which left the Jets with Marcus Williams and Josh Thomas as the cornerback options. Kyle Wilson remains an enigma in the slot position while the defense still struggles to defend opposing tight ends. If you continue to give 10-yard cushions in pass coverage, teams will dink and dunk right down the field.

Quarterback Grade: B

With all things considered, quarterback Michael Vick played fairly well. Vick found instant chemistry with Percy Harvin and Eric Decker and effectively used his legs when plays broke down. More importantly, Vick did not turn the ball over, which has been the Jets bugaboo for the majority of the season. Vick was replaced by Matt Simms for a short time due to injury and the young signal caller played fair in spot duty.

Special Teams Grade: C

Like the rest of the team, there were positives and negatives with the special teams play. Percy Harvin had a tremendous 65-yard kickoff return, but then the unit yielded a 78-yard return to De’Anthony Thomas. The coverage units always seem to give up big plays at the most inopportune times.

Another loss in the books

The New York Jets have now lost eight games in a row with culprits throughout the organization. The offense shows flashes of improvement then falls apart in the red zone. The defense is ridiculously lacking talent in the secondary and continues to get exposed. The coaching remains questionable at times as the team lacks any type of true identity. The Jets are just a bad football team trying to find answers on a daily basis.
