Families Of L.I. Homicide Victims Call On Witnesses To Come Forward

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Family members of Long Island homicide victims gathered at a church in Uniondale to ask the public for help in solving the crimes that took their loved ones.

"We hear people talking about knowing who's done some of these crimes and they're not saying anything, they're not coming forward," Valerie McFadden of Sisters Against Violence in Our Communities said Thursday during a press conference at Tabernacle of Joy Church.

McFadden was joined by about a dozen relatives of homicide victims.

Algernon and Rhona Lawrence of Westbury said witnesses have stayed silent since their 20-year-old son, Brendan, was shot to death in Freeport five years ago.

"They're probably just scared to come forward," Algernon Lawrence said.

"We're still in limbo, five years and we're still in limbo," Rhona Lawrence said.

Families are pleading for information about the unsolved crimes.

"The community members who know what's going on are not coming forth to work with Crime Stoppers and work with the police department to get these murderers off the street," McFadden said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
