Sources To CBS2: Drugs Found In Vehicle Of White Plains Firefighter Who Killed Mother Of 3 In Crash

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Numb with grief, the teenage children of Reyda LaMadrid said goodbye and vented their frustration at the way their mother died—allegedly at the hands of a drunk, off-duty White Plains firefighter who is now out on bail and may have also been under the influence of drugs.

"There are no words. I mean, we want justice. I lost my mom. I lost my mom. We lost our mom," Roslyn Lopez said, LaMadrid's daughter.

"It hurts that he's a fireman and he should know that," her son, Joseph Lopez, said.

As CBS2's Lou Young reported, the wrong-way crash was so violent that the scene was littered with debris and scattered newspaper for hours Monday.

After the crash, investigators say 34-year-old Erik Refvik backed into the lobby of a nearby apartment building in an apparent attempt to get away.

Now CBS2 has learned police found what appear to be illegal drugs in his SUV; powder in a pocket and pills in a passenger door. Sources tell CBS2 the substances found in his vehicle appear to be cocaine and MDMA, a pill commonly known as "Molly" or ecstasy.

The drugs are currently being tested, along with his blood.

Refvik has already been charged with driving while intoxicated and criminally negligent homicide charges could be increased by a grand jury, Young reported.

"It's sad. It hurts," Port Chester resident Jorge Robles said.

The Port Chester restaurant LaMadrid managed is closed so mourners can pay their respects.

She also worked to deliver newspapers as a second job to raise two teenage children.Their father, her ex-husband, was driving the car Monday and remains hospitalized.

LaMadrid's body will be taken from a funeral home to her native country of Peru for burial.

Her accused killer is out on $25,000 bond and staying with relatives and suspended from his job while prosecutors wait for the drug tests to come back from the lab.
