Injury Report: Seahawks Are Wounded Birds Coming Into Giants' Clash

By Curt Macysyn

The New York Giants had some good news and some bad news at practice on Thursday. The good news was that running back Rashad Jennings was able to practice with the team, albeit on a limited basis, raising hope that he could play on Sunday. On the bad side, cornerback Zack Bowman, the replacement for injured Prince Amukamara, did not practice and was sent to the hospital for tests for stomach pains.

The Seattle Seahawks are the defending champions and have played with a bullseye on their backs this entire season. As if that burden were not enough, the team listed 14 players on their injury report for Sunday. Part of the list sounds like a Pro Bowl roster, with Marshawn Lynch, Bobby Wagner, Kam Chancellor and Michael Bennett unable to practice on Thursday.

The key news centers around cornerback Zack Bowman, who went to the hospital on Thursday due to severe stomach pain, but was released before the day was over. There appears to be a chance that Bowman plays on Sunday, if his stomach flu allows him to do so. If he cannot go, then unreliable Jayron Hosley gets thrust into the starting line-up and practice squad call-up Chandler Fenner takes Hosley's spot at the nickel corner position.

"It's getting close. No setbacks. Felt like myself a little bit. Tomorrow I plan on doing the same thing, and just going from there," Jennings said according to Kiernan Darcy of ESPNNewYork.com. Jennings would provide a much needed boost to the rushing attack that has floundered lately with rookie Andre Williams getting the majority of snaps at the position. Williams averaged a meager 1.8 yards rushing in 12 attempts against the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night.

Defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka sat out practice on Wednesday and Thursday with a knee issue, but head coach Tom Coughlin indicated Kiwi would be practicing on Friday. Rookie guard Weston Richburg sustained an ankle injury and was carted off the field on Monday, but he has practiced and could possibly play on Sunday. His replacement Adam Snyder also showed up on the injury report with a knee injury, which did not allow him to get any practice in on Thursday, but did practice on Friday, which is normally a good sign.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has to juggle multiple injuries as the team looks to get back into the NFC West race against the Arizona Cardinals (7-1). This week, Carroll will be getting some players back on the field, but may lose others.

According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, "Carroll said four players who were out last week appear to be making it back this week — center Max Unger, left tackle Russell Okung, safety Jeron Johnson and cornerback Byron Maxwell. He said Okung had 'a really good day' on Thursday and that Unger has made it through the week of practice."

Getting Johnson back would soften the sting if Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor cannot play, and Russell Okung is one of the top offensive linemen in the league, so getting him back helps the entire offense. With tight end Zach Miller declared out, backup Luke Miller will be thrust into a starting role. Recently signed Tony Moeaki may also be active on Sunday in Miller's absence. Moeaki had a try-out with the Giants during their bye week.

If Marshawn Lynch cannot play, the Robert Turbin will get the call. Turbin had five carries for 35 yards last week against the Oakland Raiders, and he is a capable back-up. The James Carpenter and Steve Schilling injuries bear watching because there is not much depth along the offensive line. Carpenter is the starter at guard, but Schilling is the back-up at that position and at center as well.

With Bobby Wager out, Brock Coyle may get his second career start. Coyle started last week against the Oakland Raiders and had two tackles. He is a rookie undrafted free agent from the University of Montana.

Another area to watch is the injury to Doug Baldwin. Since the Seahawks jettisoned Percy Harvin a couple of weeks ago, the trade depleted their depth at wide receiver. Rookie Paul Richardson is trying to fill the breach and has nine catches over the past three games.
