L.I. High School Senior Wins $10,000 Scholarship For Anti Texting And Driving Video

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island high school student has won the grand prize in an anti texting and driving campaign.

Brentwood High School senior Laura Villatoro said she knows firsthand how dangerous it could be to text and drive because of what happened to an 18-year-old relative.

"She died in a car accident because of distracted driving and my grandparents had to pull the plug on her," Villatoro said.

Villatoro worked 10 months on an anti texting and driving campaign sponsored by iDrive.

She created a video showing a high school graduation ceremony with one teen missing because he was killed while texting and driving on the way over, 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported.

"They're calling out his name, his mom is looking at the seat, the seat's empty, nobody's sitting in the seat and she's wondering, 'Where is he? Where is my son?'" Villatoro explained.

"Her PSA was phenomenal," said iDrive founder James Billings. "She made cupcakes that said 'No texting-and-driving' on them."

Billings presented Villatoro with a $10,000 scholarship on Friday.

She was also awarded a proclamation by Suffolk County 3rd Precinct Officer Bonnie Raber.

"We're so happy for you," Raber told Villatoro.
