Suspect Charged In Shooting That Wounded Mom Picking Up Child In Brighton Beach

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect was charged Friday in a shooting in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn this week, which left a woman wounded in crossfire while she was on her way to pick up her children at a nearby school.

Christian Hylton, 19, was charged with first-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, in connection with the Wednesday shooting, police told 1010 WINS.

A suspect opened fire Wednesday afternoon during a fight near Grady High School, at 25 Brighton 4th Rd. in Brooklyn. One of the bullets struck 34-year-old Safia Bibi, who was walking to pick up her two sons from P.S. 253.

"She tried to run back home, but then she felt something on her back again," her niece Kainat Yasin said. "That's when she collapsed and then she screamed out, 'I need help.'"

Bibi was released from the hospital before the end of the night Wednesday after surgery on her arm.

Bibi and her family have lived in the area for 17 years and say fights at Grady High happen every day. With the elementary school so close, they want more consistent security to keep an eye on the rowdy teens.

Police sources confirmed Thursday the groups fighting when the shooting happened were mostly Grady students, but were not sure whether the shooter attends the school, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.
