Queens Burglary Suspect Injured In Police-Involved Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD said officers shot a man while responding to a reported burglary Monday afternoon in Jamaica, Queens.

Police told 1010 WINS the officers were responding to a burglary in progress when a woman on the second floor screamed for help.

"They saw the women as they got out of the car," NYPD Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce told reporters, including WCBS 880's Alex Silverman. "She was directing them from the window downstairs to the house."

Officers Govin Raghunath and Craig Lalla arrived on the scene and ran to the back of the location through an open door before they were confronted by a man, police said.

The man, Leighton Friday, 19, then allegedly struck one of the officers with an object, causing a laceration to the officer's head.

Two officers then opened fire on the suspect, hitting him in the wrist and thigh, authorities said.

He was taken to Jamaica Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer who was hit in the head was also taken to Jamaica Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The victim was shaken to the core after waking up to hear a burglar ransacking her home.

"I heard the door slam, the closet doors opening, you know I realized it could be somebody in the house," Barbara Balkarran said.

Balkarran works the night shift and was fast asleep when the burglar broke in through a back door.

"The middle of the day when this is happening. I mean they have some nerve," Balkarran's husband Michael told CBS2's Tony Aiello.

Boyce said the house was ransacked and jewelry was everywhere.

Benjamin, a witness, was watching as the suspect was carried out.

"He was handcuffed," Benjamin said. "He was completely naked."

Stripping the suspect is standard procedure so that police can check for weapons and EMS can check for wounds. Said a law enforcement source, "We don't care if he's embarrassed."
