Jacob DeGrom: Mets 'Should Be Able To Make It To The Playoffs Next Year'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Jacob deGrom is the toast of the town after taking home the National League Rookie of the Year Award on Monday.

The long-haired pitcher came out of virtually nowhere to dominate the NL in his first year in the majors, and he has high expectations for his sophomore campaign.

Not just for himself, but for the Mets.

"I think we should be able to make it to the playoffs next year, and hopefully get to the World Series," the 26-year-old told reporters on Tuesday, according to Newsday.

The Amazin's are expecting to have a healthier David Wright, and starting pitcher Matt Harvey will return after missing all of 2014 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

General manager Sandy Alderson also boosted the offense on Monday, aggressively signing free-agent outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a two-year $21 million deal.

"With Harvey coming back -- another great pitcher -- and we got Cuddyer, and David is going to be healthy," deGrom said," according to the newspaper. "So when all that comes together, it should be something special."

The hope is that Travis d'Arnaud, Lucas Duda, Juan Lagares, Zack Wheeler, Jeurys Familia and Jenrry Mejia will continue to shine, and Curtis Granderson will return to form.

And then there's the highly-anticipated debut of that Syndergaard guy.

"Hopefully, if everyone stays healthy, we should have a real chance at winning something," deGrom said, according to Newsday.

The Mets haven't made the playoffs since 2006, and haven't had a winning season since 2008.
