Heyman: Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins Closing In On Monster Contract
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Giancarlo Stanton is reportedly close to getting a contract that will pay him a fortune.
According to CBSSports.com and WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, the Miami Marlins are prepared to give their 25-year-old slugger a "landmark" contract that would exceed the record $292 million deal the Detroit Tigers gave Miguel Cabrera back in March.
The sides have been talking about a 13-year deal that would pay Stanton $325 million. The contract is expected to have both a no-trade and opt-out clause, Heyman reported.
As far as annual average value goes, the contract under the reported terms would not approach the record $30-plus million per year deal that the Los Angeles Dodgers gave left-hander Clayton Kershaw in January.
Still, the contract appears to be impressive and at the same time a bit surprising, considering the Marlins' current highest-paid player is catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia at $7 million per season. Stanton made $6.5 million in 2014 and is viewed as the centerpiece of everything the Marlins are trying to do, Heyman reported.
Stanton, who finished second Thursday to Kershaw in the NL MVP voting, was hitting .288 with 37 home runs and a career-high 105 RBI when he was hit in the face with a pitch on Sept. 11 against Milwaukee and forced to miss the rest of the season.
The 6-foot-6, 240-pound outfielder has 154 homers, 399 RBI and a .271 average over his five major league seasons.
