Ouch! NFL Hits Jets' Rex Ryan With $100,000 Fine For Profanity
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- As far as the NFL is concerned, Jets head coach Rex Ryan needs to have his mouth washed out with soap.
Ryan has been fined $100,000 for his postgame use of profanity that was picked up on video last Sunday.
After the Jets beat the Steelers 20-13, Ryan could be seen yelling agitatedly while walking onto the field to meet Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Ryan has been fined twice in the past for public obscenities and was considered a repeat offender by the league.
Ryan was upset when Steelers safety Michael Mitchell leaped over the offensive line while the Jets were doing a kneel-down at the end of the game. Afterward, Ryan called it "bush league."
His previous fines were $50,000 by the Jets in 2010 after he made an obscene gesture at a fan at an MMA fight, and $75,000 by the NFL the next year for cursing at a fan at halftime.
Ryan becomes the seventh person and third coach to be fined $100,000. Tomlin was docked $100,000 last year for interfering with a kickoff return by Baltimore's Jacoby Jones. In 2005, then-Vikings coach Mike Tice was fined for scalping Super Bowl tickets.
Two of Ryan's players were also fined Friday. Quarterback Michael Vick was fined $8,268 for unsportsmanlike conduct because he flipped the ball at an opponent. Defensive end Jason Babin was fined $16,537 for unnecessary roughness because he struck Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger late. Babin rolled into Roethlisberger's leg and was given a penalty.
Earlier this season, quarterback Geno Smith was caught on camera lashing out at a fan.
