Block Of Lafayette Street Evacuated As Fire Burns Through Newark Homes

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Crews evacuated a block of Lafayette Street as firefighters battle flames burning through several homes in Newark.

CBS2 reported the calls first came in around 10 p.m. with residents snapping photos and video as they waited several streets away.

Witness Kyle Dasilva spoke with 1010 WINS and said about two to three houses caught on fire and said he saw an abundance of firefighters on the scene.

Parts of one of the buildings has collapsed, 1010 WINS reported.

"One house is completely destroyed," Dasilva said.

"All you could see was a huge cloud of smoke and once you got closer you could just see flames everywhere. As soon as you got close to it, you could feel it," he added.

There is no word yet on what may have caused the fire and no injuries have been reported.
