NJ Animal Shelter Quarantined After Inspection Finds Animals In Critical Condition

HELMETTA, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A central New Jersey animal shelter has been quarantined following an inspection by Middlesex County health officials and the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Home News Tribune reports that several animals were removed from the Helmetta Regional Animal Shelter Thursday in critical condition. One cat died on the way to the veterinarian and another animal was euthanized due to its condition.

The NJSPCA had returned to the shelter as a result of an earlier inspection that found six areas of concern, including disease control in the shelter.

The newspaper reports that the shelter has come under scrutiny recently for violations from health officials.

No animals will be allowed in or out of the shelter and officials don't know when the shelter will reopen.
