Clarkstown Police Warn Of 'IRS' Phone Scam
CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Beware of a phone scam in which the callers pose as the IRS.
Clarkstown police are warning about a scam after receiving dozens of complaints this week, mostly in New City, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.
In the computer-generated calls, a female voice informs the person on the other end of the line that the IRS is planning to file a lawsuit for tax evasion -- unless he or she pays up, Clarkstown Police Officer Peter Walker described. The caller then instructs the person to purchase a prepaid Green Dot card and to then call back with the card's serial number.

"And then that money that you put on that card is gone," Walker said.
Police advise that no government agency or utility will ever call to demand payment over the phone.
Clarkstown police are currently investigating with the help of state and federal agencies. Authorities are asking anyone who believes they may be a victim of the scam to contact their local police department.
