Officer On Horseback Rushes To Scene After Shooting In Newark
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A police officer on horseback was among those who pursued a suspect Wednesday, after a man was shot and wounded on a street in Newark.
A man was shot just before 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Mulberry Street, in the East Ward of Newark, police said.
As 911 calls came in, a mounted officer heard several shots fired and responded to the scene, police said. Several other officers also responded in squad cars, and found a man shot at the scene, police said.
The man was rushed to Rutgers-University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he was reported in critical condition, police said.
Officers recovered a weapon and took a suspect into custody, police said.
An NJ.com report said the mounted officer, Erich Shroeder, took the suspect into custody as he ran off. Shroeder works with a horse named Bullet, police said.
"This was the result of a quick response from the units detailed near Market Street as part of a new initiative started this week. I would like to commend those officers for their superb police work," Newark Police Director Eugene Venable said in a news release.
