Officials: Suspect In Critical Condition After Police-Involved Shooting In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Newark police officer shot a suspect who was struggling with other officers, authorities said.

Police, working to eliminate firearms from the street, were trying to stop and interview the suspect Thursday night when he fled in a cab, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

The suspect then jumped out of the cab and ran off on foot with police in pursuit, the prosecutor's office said.

The suspect was shot once by a veteran police officer in the area of South 6th Street during a struggle with officers, officials said.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, is in critical condition and a weapon was recovered, the prosecutor's office said.

The officer was taken to a hospital for observation and released.

"Whenever there is a police-involved shooting, the investigation is immediately turned over to the County Prosecutor's Office for review. This is routine and is done in every such shooting to assure that all protocols were followed," Newark Police Director Eugene Venable said in a statement. "As such, I await the outcome of their query before I comment any further on this matter."
