South Plainfield Factory Explosion Leaves 5 With Minor Injuries

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - An explosion at a plastic goods manufacturer in South Plainfield, New Jersey, Friday left some injured.

"I saw a lot of smoke and the building top and outside by the pipe, I saw a lot of fire over there," one witness told WCBS 880's Levon Putney.

The man was among workers in an industrial park across the street from Polymer Dynamix who came out to see the aftermath.

"It was due to some maintenance on a machine at the time. Something reacted and exploded," Fire Chief Tom Scalera said.

Scalera said five people at the factory sustained minor injuries, including one with a concussion and four others with scrapes and bruises.

"Big enough explosion to put a hole in a roof," Scalera said of the explosion.

It took half an hour to knock out the blaze once firefighters got there after the explosion, Putney reported.
