9-Month-Old Child Shot In Brooklyn, Police Say

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are investigating after a 9-month-old baby was shot, the bullet hitting her in the hip, at an apartment on Sutter Avenue Saturday around 1:30 p.m. in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

The child was taken to Woodhull Hospital then transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, police say.

The parents flagged down police while in a livery cab, saying she was sick, police said.

Sources tell CBS2 the child's father was cleaning a Colt 45 handgun when it accidentally discharged.

Police said the child's parents have been taken in for questioning and Kozar reported sources say the infant's father will likely face charges.

Sources say the father does not have a license for a weapon and has been previously arrested for weapons possession, CBS2 reported.

Police are waiting for ballistics tests to determine if the gun has ever been used in a crime, Kozar reported.

The family's neighbors say they are saddened that an innocent girl was hurt.

"I would never suspect that he to carry any gun because he's a working man. He's a good person," Tiffany Sanders said.

Last week, a 9-year-old girl was seriously wounded in Newark when her 12-year-old brother shot her by accident while playing with a loaded 9mm handgun found in the home, police said.

Newark police announced they arrested and charged the children's mother, 33-year-old Catrease Thomas, with endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a weapon.

The 9mm was reported stolen out of Alabama and was unsecured in her home home, police said.
