Bail Reduction Request Denied For Man Accused In Slaying Of Paterson Teen

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Bail for one of the men accused in the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old Paterson girl will remain at $2 million despite a reduction request.

A state judge rejected the request from 20-year-old Shakeem Ricks after a court hearing on Friday, The Record reported.

Ricks' lawyer, Peter Festa, had argued that Passaic County prosecutors have not offered any evidence that ties Ricks to the slaying of high school freshman Nazerah Bugg.

Bugg was killed on the evening of Sept. 20 as she walked with friends on Clinton Street after leaving Mom's Fried Chicken. Her 15-year-old friend was also shot and wounded.

Prosecutors noted that Ricks also faces attempted murder charges related to another victim in the shooting, and they said he allegedly threatened to kill an accomplice if that person talked about the shooting.

Superior Court Judge Bruno Mongiardo turned down the request, saying that the case is still in its early stages.

Ricks is just one of seven people accused in Bugg's death. Tyheem Mayfield, 22, Nyje Johnson, 19, Basim Williams, 22 and three teenage boys are also facing charges.
