Nassau Police: Man Killed, Driver Seriously Injured In West Hempstead Crash

WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.  (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police said a passenger was killed in a crash on Long Island after the elderly driver lost control of the vehicle Friday evening.

The crash happened around 5:15 p.m. on Eagle Avenue in West Hempstead.

Nassau County police said the 81-year-old driver was heading west on Eagle Avenue just after leaving a drugstore when the car went out of control.

The car jumped a curb, veered back into the drugstore parking lot, hit two parked cars and crossed a road on the other side of the parking lot before hitting a tree and coming to a stop, authorities said.

The passenger, 87-year-old Henry Gugumuck, of Malverne, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The driver, whose name has not been released, is listed in serious condition with head and neck injuries.
