NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An explosion Thursday afternoon left one person in serious condition, and damaged part of a home, in Ozone Park, Queens.

As CBS2’s Tracee Carrasco reported, Thanksgiving was ruined for the families living in the multi-family home on 108th Street in Queens. They were left without a place to spend the holiday after the back portion of the home exploded and collapsed.

A resident who lives on the top floor told CBS2 around 1:45 p.m., he heard a loud boom. He and his family ran out after hearing the explosion to see the bottom, back part of the home was destroyed.

The resident said he believes the explosion may have happened in the basement.

One person was taken an area hospital with serious burns.

Mary Romero’s home backs right up to where the explosion happened, and part of the roof of her basement collapsed from the force.

“My house shook. I didn’t hear any explosion or anything. And then where I was laying in bed — thank God it was the other side of the bed — my ceiling came down and knocked over my lamp and everything I had on the end table – knocked it off,” Romero said.

National Grid was called out to the scene. It was unclear whether the explosion might have resulted from was a Thanksgiving cooking accident.

Investigators late Thursday were still on scene trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.
