North Shore Animal League Offers Free Pet Adoptions On Black Friday

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - On this Black Friday, it wasn't just shoppers that had new additions to their homes-- but pet lovers, too.

As TV 10/55's Richard Rose reported, folks braved long lines to adopt adorable pets for free at North Shore Animal League in Port Washington.

"I stood in line for two hours in the freezing cold this morning and then I went inside and I found the most adorable Labrador retriever mix puppy that we are adopting," Nancy Cave said.

The free promotion is meant to let animal lovers know there is no shortage of candidates.

"We have over 500 animals available for adoption today and all through the weekend," Christina Travalja said.

Shelter managers point out the lovable, furry friends have all been checked out and maintained in good health by shelter workers.

It's a deal the Digiamo family could not pass up.

"It's Black Friday, we got it for free. We left a nice donation for the next puppies and now we're going to get our free bag of dog food that we're getting," Jenny Digiamo said.

The family adopted twin German shepherd sisters they're still trying to name.

"We're thinking about Mia, my brother is thinking about Shea, so we're going to see how their personalities are in the next few days," Digiamo said.

The free adoption is just a one-day deal, in part to get anyone who misses the promotion to consider dozens of dogs recently rescued from puppy mills.

"This is a little puppy that is going up for adoption today, he's a shepherd mix he's about probably two to three months old right now, so he's waiting for a new home," Travalja said.

The 90 rescued puppies up for adoption starting Saturday include Shih Tzus, Poodles, Yorkies and miniature Pinschers.
