Police Officers In NJ Bring Holiday Cheer To Family In Need

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of police officers in New Jersey got together last weekend to spread some much-needed holiday cheer.

As 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet reported, coming home from her chemotherapy treatment on Saturday, Jill Zane was surprised by what she saw.

"They cleaned up our whole cul de sac and the pretty lights and just, everything they did for us," Zane said tearfully.

Zane and her husband are dealing with her stage four breast cancer diagnosis while also caring for one of their children, who suffers from chronic illnesses, Granet reported.

The effort to help out the Zane family was put forth by officers from both the Wall Township and Toms River police departments, who knew the family's story and wanted to help.

"This is what we're meant to do. This is why we wear this uniform," said Wall Township PBA President James Cadigan. "It's very touching, very emotional for me so anything we can do for this family, we're gonna do it and we're gonna continue to do it."

Cadigan said those would like to drop off gift cards or any cash donations to the Zane family can bring them to the Wall Police Station and the PBA will match the donations made, Granet reported.

Additionally, Toms River Police Department Patrolman Jesse Robertazzi, said the police department has an "adopt a family" program for the holidays. They pick 12 families from 12 different sections of Toms River, collect cash donations for those families, and provide them with Christmas presents for that year. The Zane family is one of the selected 12.
