Prosecutors: Baby In Newark Was Killed By Morphine Poisoning; Mom Held

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Newark authorities on Monday said a baby who died back in September was poisoned with morphine, and her mother has been charged in connection with her death.

Shakinah Seals, 22, of Newark, was charged Monday with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child in the death of her daughter, Iriannah Seals, 7 months, according to the Essex County, New Jersey Prosecutor's office.

On Sept. 23, paramedics were called to the family's home on Dayton Street in Newark, prosecutors said. Iriannah was rushed to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

An autopsy and toxicology results from the Essex County Medical Examiner's office determined that Iriannah had ingested a lethal amount of morphine, and the manner of her death was a homicide, prosecutors said.

Shakinah Seals was being held on $50,000 bail at the Essex County Correctional Facility Monday, prosecutors said.
