Searchers Find Autistic Queens Man Missing From Yonkers School

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 20-year-old autistic Queens man missing in Westchester County has been found.

Jose Leon failed to board his bus back home to Jackson Heights after dismissal Wednesday afternoon from Greenburgh North Castle School in Yonkers, where he is a student, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.

Police put out an alert and Leon's family drove around all night searching for him before receiving the good news early Thursday morning that Leon had been found safe in Dobbs Ferry, north of his school.

School superintendent Dr. Ed Placke is reviewing the chain of events in the transfer from school to the bus.

"The only information we have is that he was here for the entire school day and during bus dismissal all the children are dismissed in an orderly fashion here on the street and then the bus matron from the New York City bus company came in at 2:35 wondering where Jose was," Placke told Adams. "We said he was released, so he hit the pavement and we're not sure what happened after that."

Placke said Leon is fairly independent and may have tried to walk home, Adams reported.

"It's essentially a joint responsibility," Placke said. "At this point we don't know what happened, so we'll interview Jose."
