Suffolk County Getting Second Area Code

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Suffolk County is getting a second area code.

The state Public Service Commission approved the new code on Thursday, saying the existing 631 code is running out of assignable telephone numbers.

The new area code, which has not yet been determined, will be activated in late 2016.

The new area code will be assigned to new customers.  It will require 10-digit dialing for intra-county calls.

The 631 area code was split off from 516 in 1999.
