Former Jersey City Police Dispatcher Charged With Murder In Wife's Strangulation

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A former Jersey City police dispatcher has been charged with murder in the strangulation death of his wife.

The Jersey Journal reports 34-year-old Kevin Montone was taken into custody late Friday afternoon. His bail was set at $250,000, and it wasn't known Saturday if he has retained an attorney.

Montone is accused of killing his 34-year-old wife, Monica, in the couple's Jersey City home on Aug. 18. An autopsy determined that she died of "asphyxia due to neck compressions," and authorities announced Thursday that the death had been ruled a homicide.

Authorities have not said what spurred the attack.

Montone is due to make his initial court appearance Monday on the murder charge. He was a civilian police dispatcher in Jersey City before being fired in August 2013.\
