NYC Army Sergeant Killed While Serving In Afghanistan

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- An Army sergeant from New York City died from wounds suffered during an attack in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said.

On Sunday, officials said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Ramon S. Morris was killed Friday in Parwan Province, Afghanistan. U.S. Army Spc. Wyatt J. Martin, of Mesa, Arizona, also died in the attack.

Officials said the vehicle Morris and Martin were in was hit by an improvised explosive device.

Martin, 22, and Morris, 37, were assigned to the 3rd Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

As of Dec. 2, 2014, at least 2,210 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count. The AP count is three less than the Defense Department's tally, also last updated Dec. 2.
