Report: Woody Johnson, John Idzik In Early Stages Of Coaching Search

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Rex Ryan is still the head coach of the Jets, but it's very likely that he'll be fired following a nightmarish season in which Gang Green will miss the playoffs for the fourth time in a row.

According to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, general manager John Idzik and owner Woody Johnson are in the early stages of looking for a new head coach to replace Ryan.

Idzik, in just his second season as the general manager, might be fired by Johnson after the year, though Ryan's seat appears hotter.

La Canfora reports that, at this time, the organization isn't using a headhunter or a search firm to find Ryan's potential replacement. Only Idzik, Johnson and team president Neil Glat are discussing a new head coach.

Though many players have come out in Ryan's defense and have said that they would like to see him return, the team is just 3-11 and has become the laughingstock of the league.

Geno Smith has regressed in year two, and Idzik failed to fill many holes on the roster despite plenty of cap space.

The Jets won on Sunday, but the victory to the lowly Titans will hurt their draft positioning. The Redskins also have three wins, while the Titans, Jaguars, Raiders and Buccaneers have two. Whoever the general manager is at draft time will likely have eyes for college quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston.

New York's final games are against the Patriots at home and the Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium.
