Citi Bike Could Expand Into Jersey City In 2015
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Citi Bike, New York City's bike share program, could soon make its way into New Jersey.
The City Council is considering a new plan that would allow riders to dock their bikes at PATH train stations in Jersey City and then hop on another bike when they arrive in Manhattan.
"A lot of our residents here live in Jersey City, but work in New York," Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said.
Citi Bike Could Expand Into Jersey City In 2015
Fulop is not expecting many rides across the Hudson River by going north and over the George Washington Bridge, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.
"I'm a biker. I would do it, but I don't know how many other people would do it," Fulop said. "I guess it is conceivable."
Fulop said the City Council will decide on the plan to find corporate sponsors to pay for the $2.5 million program that would put about 35 stations in every ward.
The proposal calls for at least 350 bikes on the Jersey side.
One Citi Bike membership pass would provide access to bike racks on both sides of the Hudson River.
Fulop said the hope is to have the program up and running in early 2015.
