New York Cares In Need Of Donations For Annual Coat Drive

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York Cares is urging New Yorkers to donate warm winter coats this holiday season.

The organization says its annual coat drive has only brought in 18,000 coats so far this year. New York Cares Executive Director Gary Bagley said requests for coats have already surpassed 100,000.

"Those requests from social services agencies, homeless shelters," Bagley told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck."Families making very little money and they're struggling to survive and the choice is between food on the table and a warm coat."

The coat drive runs until Dec. 31. Gently used coat can be donated at all police precincts throughout New York City as well as in Bryant Park and at the New York Cares warehouse on West 31st Street between 6th and 7th avenues.

"If you have your coats ready, the sooner we get them the sooner we can distribute them to the people who need them most," Bagley said.

Bagley told CBS2 he was confident that New Yorkers would step up.

"I know that ever year, New Yorkers come through, so as ambitions as another 82,000 coats are to collect, I also know the spirit of New Yorkers," Bagley said. "Even if we were to collect more than 1,000, there is much greater need. A hundred thousand is the number of requests that we have in hand."
