12/20 CBS2 Saturday Evening Weather Headlines

By Matt DeLucia, CBS2 Meteorologist/Weather Producer

Good Saturday evening!

You may have been wondering where the sun was today... clouds ruled thanks to a low-level inversion, which we've been dealing with multiple times over the past few days. Basically, an inversion is when temperatures increase with height, which traps the moisture and clouds. This was also why it stayed cold today, as the clouds prevented the sun from warming the surface. There you go, now you can impress your friends at that holiday party tonight with some meteorological knowledge!

We'll be staying mostly cloudy overnight, with temps in the lower 30s for NYC. There is a chance of some sprinkles or flurries, especially for Long Island, but nothing to worry about.

Decreasing clouds for your Sunday, with partly sunny skies by the afternoon. Highs will reach the lower 40s, but winds out of the NW will keep those wind chills in the 30s. Winter officially arrives tomorrow at 6:03 p.m.!

Monday will start an unsettled week. Clouds will rule, with some showers moving in late. This continues into Tuesday, with plenty of clouds and showers throughout the day. Wednesday will be the main event, with heavy rain and strong winds. The up side: temps will be very mild, in the 50s for Christmas Eve!
