Christmas Eve Afternoon Weather Headlines

By Matthew DeLucia, CBS2 Meteorologist/Weather Producer

Hello everyone!

'Twas the afternoon before Christmas, and we're dealing with a real soaker out there. As expected, rain moved in earlier this morning and periods of rain will continue through today and overnight, heavy at times.

It looks like the best chances for heavy rain will be this afternoon into early evening, and then again during the early morning hours of tomorrow. A few rumbles of thunder are even possible. Highs today will reach the upper 50s to near 60, which is the norm for about mid April in Central Park!

The good news is this mess will be moving out of here shortly after sunrise tomorrow! Total rainfall will end up in the 1-2" range. Expect decreasing clouds and the return of some sunshine for Christmas Day! Highs will be in the mid 50s, but will drop tomorrow evening as a cold front swings on through. Despite the clearing, winds will be whipping! Sustained winds 20-25 mph, with gusts 30-40 mph are certainly possible.

Friday is looking great, with mostly sunny skies and temps around 50. That trend continues right into Saturday, with our next chance at some precip coming on Sunday.

Side note: there's a good chance that today and/or tomorrow will make their way into the top 10 warmest AND wettest Christmas Eves/Days on record for Central Park, which dates back to 1869. Pretty impressive!

Have a wonderful Christmas Eve and stay dry!
