Police: Man Attacked, Ran Over Girlfriend 3 Times At Toms River Gas Station

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police in New Jersey say a man ran over his girlfriend three times after he choked her at a gas station.

James Crudup, of Toms River, has been charged with attempted murder.

According to police, the 44-year-old and his girlfriend were arguing early Sunday at a gas station on Route 37 when he threw her to the ground and choked her.

The 35-year-old victim was able to get away and ran toward some gas pumps, but police said Crudup got in his SUV, put it in reverse and slammed into the woman, pinning her between a pump and the SUV's bumper.

Police said Crudup pulled the vehicle away and the woman fell to the ground. But then he allegedly drove over her legs.

Crudup then backed away a second time, but soon struck her a third time with the vehicle, authorities said. After the third strike, he fled the scene and remained on the loose for several hours.

He was arrested at around 7 p.m., the Asbury Park Press reported.

The victim was taken to a hospital and is being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
